Form 7004 extension, what it does (and doesn't)

Last reviewed: April 2026 · IRS sources verified at review date.

Form 7004 is used to request an extension of time to file certain business income tax returns. For many calendar-year filers, a timely extension can move the filing due date to October 15.

An extension extends time to file; it does not automatically extend time to pay tax that may be owed. Penalties for prior missed information returns may still apply — consult a licensed tax professional.

Form 7004 extends the time to file, not the time to pay any tax that may be owed. An extension to October 15 does not eliminate penalties for prior missed filings. Fylit generates a Form 7004 draft for you to review and submit.
